How to Choose a Bowling Ball Surface

Choosing the Bowling Ball to Fit the Situation Polished or Dull

First, this is a bowling ball comparison for helping you choose the right ball surface or cover-stock finish for certain situations on the lanes. I want to explain; having the right bowling ball for the conditions and knowing when and what type of ball to use can be a great benefit. Over the years I have seen nights when no matter what I did I just could not carry the pins, I am sure many of you have experienced this as well. I would try different balls to find out what ones worked in a given situation and what ones did not. What I have found is that there is a time to use a polished or shiny finished cover-stock and a time and a situation to use a dull type cover-stock. I do not mean pearl verse solid covers, so do not misunderstand. A shiny pearl may work better than a dull pearl and the same could be true for a dull solid working better then a shiny solid. Here is a basic rule to follow.

Rule for picking the right type cover stock finish
1 If your dull covered bowling ball hits flat at the pins then it probably burning out so change to a polished cover-stock, do not get confused with a pearl. A polished solid will retain its energy and may work better. 2. If your polished cover stock hits flat at pins then it is probably not getting any bowling ball to bowling lane surface contact. It never has a chance to grab so the ball will not react and in turn the ball will hit flat. Here again do not get dull confused with a solid bowling ball, you can use a dull pearl covered bowling ball.

Here is an example of what I mean.
I was using a dull solid cover-stock at the start of the night but it started to continually leave flat hits, like the flat 7 and 10 pin. I would change from the dull solid to a polished solid ball because I just want to get the reaction back that I had earlier in the evening. In addition, this will delay the reaction enough to stop the ball from loosing its energy. If I am using a polished ball and the lane conditioner carries down, my ball stops reacting, and I start getting those flat hits, then I will first try a dull pearl ball before changing to a dull solid reactive ball. This will get the ball to roll up a little sooner and eat through that carry down. You will have to do some testing to get the reaction that is needed. However, I think you get the idea.
Remember tips are just a tip that is all they are so if it does not work go back to what did.
