How to Surface Your Bowling Ball - a Tip for Bowling

Bowling ball maintenance is very important, but is an area that is very neglected by most bowlers. You can keep your bowling ball's surface maintained and in good condition fairly easily with some basic supplies. This is mainly for higher performance reactive bowling balls. You will need some abralon pads or scuff pads of different grits. There is a bowling ball surface chart that explains the different grits of abralon and scuff pads below. (This is if you do not have your own bowling ball spinner). You will need a bowl from your kitchen that will not scratch your bowling ball, abralon or scuff pads, a towel, and some water. You will have to experiment with the different grits to find the matching surface for your conditions. I use 1000 and 2000 grit the most.

1. Put your bowling ball in the bowl with the fingers and the thumb holes up. Using a wet abralon pad (it is important that the pad be wet), in a circular motion go around the ball about 20 to 50 times by hand then dry the ball.

2. Turn the ball in the bowl 180 degrees. Now the fingers and thumb holes are down. Do the same thing as above, in a circular motion go around the ball using the wet abralon pad. Do this about 20 to 50 times then dry the ball.

3. Now turn your ball so the track side of the ball is up. The fingers and the thumb holes will be pointing toward you. Do the same thing as before in a circular motion around the ball using the wet abralon pad about 20 to 50 times then dry the ball.

4. Turn the ball in the bowl 180 degrees now the track side will be down. Repeat the circular motion with the wet abralon pad 20 to 50 times then dry the ball.

5. Turn the ball in the bowl 90 degrees. Now the fingers up and thumb holes will be down. Again repeat the circular motion around the ball with the wet abralon pad about 20 to 50 times then dry the ball.

6. Turn the ball in the bowl 180 degrees. Now the thumb will be up and the fingers down. Do the same thing as before, a circular motion around the ball with the wet abralon pad about 20 to 50 times then dry the ball.

This is a process that should be used every 10 to 15 games. To have the same surface every time I use it on mine before every bowling session. I know its some work, but really does help. (Note: You can do a quickie with only a couple of the steps, like just doing step 1 and 2 for example just to freshen up the surface.)
